Vembanad Lake

Vembanad Lake also termed as Vembanad Kayal is the largest lake of Kerala State and Longest Lake of India. The Vembanad wetland system covers an area of over 2033.02 km² and is the largest wetland system in India. Alappuzha , Kottayam and Ernakulam District of Kerala Borders the lake. The Kayal is known by various names in different places of its location like Kochi Lake in in Cochin City and Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha and Kuttanad region . It is the major tourist attraction of Kerala as it forms the famous backwaters of the Kerala State of India

Punnamada region of this lake in Kuttanad is where the famous Nehru Trophy Boat Race is held every year. The lake is fed by 10 rivers flowing into it including the six major rivers of central Kerala namely the Achenkovil, Manimala, Meenachil, Muvattupuzha, Pamba and Periyar.

Hundred of House boats or Kettuvallams rolling over it and various exotic resorts at its bank makes this lake as an integral part of Kerala Tourism Industry . Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is also located on its coast. Alleppey Backwaters also known as "Venice of East " is sandwiched between the Vembanad Lake and the Arabian Sea.
