Mammiyoor temple

Mammiyoor temple is Hindu temple situated at Guruvayoor in Thrissur district of Kerala in south India. Mammiyoor temple is dedicated to lord Shiva who is worshiped in the form of Uma Maheswara. Some other sub-deities worshiped here such as lord Ganesha, Lord Muruga, Lord Ayyappa, Nagaraja and Nagarani and Goddess Bhagavathy.Only Hindus religious people are allowed inside the temple.This temple is a part of the 108 famous Shiva temples in Kerala and one among the five Shiva temples around Guruvayoor. Mammiyoor Temple also known as the name of Mammiyoor Shiva Temple or Mammiyur Mahadeva Kshetram.Mammiyur Shiva Temple is the only temple where Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu are worshipped in equal status.Do not enter the Nalambalam of the temple wearing shirt,banyan, pyjama, lungi, chequered cloths, chapels, etc.It is believed that the pilgrimage to Guruvayur Temple would be incomplete if the Mammiyur Shiva Temple is not visited.There is also a shrine for the Nagaraja and Nagarani.

History

It is believed that the pilgrimage to Guruvayur Temple would be incomplete if the Mammiyur Shiva Temple is not visited.It was the final phase of Dwaparayuga. The great Deluge has submersed Sree Krishna’s stay on Dwaraka and the Lord as a playful child, was playing on a banyan leaf tossed about by the surging waters. Devaguru Brihaspathi and wind god Vayu falter upon him where upon the Lord himself handed over to them the idol of the Supreme Lord that he has been worshipping at Dwaraka, with instructions to have it installed and dedicated at an appropriate spot on earth.Guru and Vayu then descended on the banks of a sprawing lake Rudratheertha providing holy by Lord Shiva who has been doing penance . Realizing the purpose of the visit Lord Shiva suggested that there itself on the bank of Rudratheertha and accommodatingly moved over to a near by location on the other side of the Rudhra theertha.The place where Guru and Vayu dedicated the idol of Lord Krishna became Guruvayur and the site that Lord Shiva chose for himself and his consort Sree Parvathy became Mahimayur, mahima evolving out of the status impart on Lord Shiva for voluntarily renouncing his initial continue to accommodate Lord Krishna. This in course of time got colloquialised as Mahimayur.

Festival and Architecture

There are many occasions celebrated in Mammiyur Shiva Temple at the Time of Festivals.Maha Shivrathri is one of the famous festival celebrated in this temple. It is come in the month of Kumbha between middle of February – March.during the festival Sudhi, Laksharchana, Ekadasa Rudrabhisheka, Chuttuvilakku, Niramala and other special poojas is conducted. Pradhishta Day is also celebrated in month of makaram between January -February.on this special occasion devotees wokship the lord vishnu. during the festival. Sudhikalasam, Laksharchana, Chuttuvilakku, Niramala and other special poojas are held . Apart from these Festival Navarathri,Manadala Pooja,Vinayaka Chathurthy,Shashti,Ashtami Rohini and Vishnu are the some of the other festivals celebrated here.The Architecture style of the temple is Kerala style of Architecture.The temple pond on the northern side is known as Rudhratheertham. Devotees can purify themselves by taking bath here and can enter the temple preferably with wet clothes. Ornaments and such other costly offerings can be put in the Bhandaram.The Ganapathy Shrine is situated at the south western corner in the Nalambalam.The idol of Goddess Bhagavathy is installed in a separate sanctum at the north-west corner of the temple.
Darshan Timing : At Morning: 4.45 am to 12.30 pm and At Evening: 4.45 pm to 8.30 pm.

How to Reach:

By Train:Guruvayur Railway Station is the nearest station to reach the temple. Thrissur Railway Station is the nearest major railway station which is about 29 km from Guruvayoor.

By Bus:Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) as well as numerous private bus services runs interstate bus services which connects the Guruvayur temple town with all major cities in South India. National Highway 17 passes through Kunnamkulam around 8 km from Guruvayoor.

By Airport: Nedumbassery Airport or Kochi International Airport is the nearest airport that is situated 80 km from Guruvayur town.
