Bhoothathankettu located in Ernakulam District of Kerala about 10 km from Kothamangalam is a famous Dam and reservoir also known by name of Thattekad Reservoir . It offers great scenic beauty and is a tourist place for nature lovers and trekkers . Huge unshaped stones are placed on both sides of the Periyar River which act as a form of Dam.
Trikkariyoor temple is located nearby the Dam , it is believed that some monsters planned to submerge this temple which is dedicated to Lord Shiva . They planned to make dam across River Periyar and flood the area where temple is located but Lord Shiva knowing there plan came and made a sound like the crowing of the rooster. The demons fearing the arrival of light fled from their task. But there remains to this day the visible proof of their effort – the huge stones the demons were supposed to have rolled onto the riverbed, the Old Bhothathankettu.
