Eravikulam National Park is a protected located in the High Ranges of the Southern Western Ghats in the Devikolam Taluk of Idukki district in Kerala State.It spread over an area of about 97 Km2 of rolling grasslands.The Eravikulam National park was declared a national park in the year of 1978.It was declared a Sanctuary in the year 1975 with the intention of protecting the indigenous population of Nilgiri Tahr.The main body of the park consists of a high rolling hill plateau with a base elevation of about 2,000 m. The average annual rainfall is about 3000mm.The Best reason to visit the Eravikulam National park in the month of January-February.The deeper valleys of the forest are extensively forested.A well formed security wing is working to protect the park day and night.
The Eravikulam National park is administered and controlled by the Kerala Department of Forests and Wildlife, Munnar Wildlife Division along with others National Parks and sanctuary.The national park is a home for different Species of faunal and floral.There are 26 species of mammals,132 species of birds and 19 species of amphibians are found here. New species of frog is spotted within The Eravikulam National park.Some little known animals such as Nilgiri langur, Stripe-necked Mongoose, Indian Porcupine, Nilgiri Marten, small clawed otter, Ruddy Mongoose, and Dusky palm squirrel are also found.A new bright reddish-orange-colored frog with multiple glands and extremely short limbs has been discovered in the Eravikulam National Park. Among Flora there are 3 major types of plants found in the Park such as grasslands, shrublands and forests.
Trekking and Boating activities are provided to the tourist and visitors. Some of the Important flora includes Actinodaphne bourdilloni, Microtropis ramiflora, Pittosporum tetraspermium, Sysygium aronottianum, Chrysopogon Zelanieus, Eupatorium adenophorum, Strobilanthus Kunthianus , Eulalia phaeothrix, Tripogen bromodes, Arundinella fuscata, Cyanotis Species etc.
