Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is located on Thiruvanthapuram Ponmudi road at the distance of about 50km northeast of Thiruvananthapuram.The Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1938. It is spread over an area of 53 sq. km on the Western Ghats.It was declared as a wildlife sanctuary consequent to the construction of a dam at Peppara, in order to cater to the needs of drinking water purposes of Thiruvananthapuram and suburban areas. The Superior time to visit the Sanctuary in the month of January to March.
The Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary include Flora and fauna in the Forest of Sanctuary.There are 43 species of mammals, 233 species of birds, 46 species of reptiles, 13 species of amphibians and 27 species of fishes are found in the sanctuary.The sanctuary has a rich population of mammalian fauna .The common mammals found are Tiger, Leopard, Sloth bear, Elephant, Sambar barking Deer, bonnet Macaque, Nilgiri langur, Nilgiri tahr etc.There are Bird life includes the endemics like Malabar Grey Horn-bill, White bellied Tree-pie, Small Sunbird, etc and Asian elephant, sambar, leopard, lion-tailed macaque can be seen here.
There are three major forest such as :southern hilltop tropical evergreen forests that occur mostly on the hills with an altitude of above 1000m, west coast semi- evergreen forests that found atop the hills with an altitude of 150 to 1050m and southern moist mixed deciduous forests found in the lower slopes of the hills and cover more than 60% of the area.The place is fascinating for its dam site, thick forest areas, eucalyptus plantations, crystal clear streams and rocky terrains ideal for adventure expeditions.
The Peppara Wildlife sanctuary has tropical, evergreen and deciduous forests, and the hilly parts of the sanctuary harbor tropical forests.The wildlife sanctuary is home to the Peppara Dam built on the serene Karamana River, adding to its scenic ambience.
