Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is the second largest wildlife sanctuary in India.The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is located 16km east of Sulthan Bathery in the state of Kerala.Wayanad wildlife sanctuary was Developed in the year of 1973 and was brought under the Project Elephant in the year 1991-92. The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is also known as the name of “Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary” .The wildlife area is spread over an area of 344km2 .

Wayanad Wildlife sanctuary is separated into two disconnected parts known as the Upper Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary in the north and Lower Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary.The wild animal such as Elephant, tiger, Panther, jungle cat, civet cat, monkeys, wild dog, bison, deer, bear, etc. inhabit in this sanctuary. Reptiles like monitor lizard and a variety of snakes are seen .babblers, cuckoos, owl, wood pecker and jungle fowl are only a few among the different types of birds seen in the area.There are wild birds, peacock and peafowl birds are found in the sanctuary.The animals usually spend much time in the Wayanad Sanctuary area till the end of month May. The summer season offers an idealistic occasion to spot wildlife, when many animals including tigers and elephants from neighboring sanctuaries move in to the Wayanad sanctuary, basically in search of food and water.

The Wayanad Wildlife sanctuary is integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.The sanctuary comes under the Wayanand Wildlife Division with head quarters at Sultan Bathery. There are more species of Flora and fauna are found in the sanctuary.The major tree species are Tectona grandis, Terminal Sp, Dalbergia latifolia, Anogeissus latifolia, Grewia iliaefolia, Adina cordifolia Cirmamum zeylanicum, Pterocarpus marsupium, Vateria indica, Largerstroemia ,lanceolata, Artocarpus hirsute, Macranga peltata etc are found.

Best time to visit Wayanand Wildlife sanctuary in the month of December to May.Water falls at Chedalayam is special attraction towards the tourist and visisters.there are different forest types include South Indian Moist Deciduous forests, West coast semi-evergreen forests and plantations of teak, eucalyptus and Grewelia is seen.Muthanga and Tholpetty are the two ecotourism centers in Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary.

Timing:Daily -At Morning -7.00am to 10.00 am & At Evening-3.00pm to 4.30 pm

How to Reach:

By Train: Kozhikode Railway stationis the nearest Railway Station located 110 km from Wayanad.

By Airport: Karipur International Airport located in Kozhikode is nearest airport about 100 km from Wayanad.

By Bus: Various state owned buses and private run buses are available to reach Wayanad and well connecting to neighbor districts of Kerala.
