Periyar is a wildlife sanctuary in Western Ghats in the Idukki District of the Kerala state in India. . It is a highly protected tiger and elephant reserve. Other mammals found here include gaur, Bison, sambar deer, barking deer, mouse deer, Dholes, mongoose, foxes and leopards. There is also a wide variety of birds, butterflies and reptiles. Sabrimala, a temple visited by 4 million pilgrims every year, is within the buffer zone of Periyar. It is about 120km from Kochi. It is also known as Thekkady.
